After spending the weekend in Dublin, one thing I took back with me is this new appreciation for the pub environment. I spend about a month solely listening to songs I heard while I was out and about on St. Patrick's Day weekend. Now I'm prepared to join in and sing along even harder when I go back. Here are some of the most played songs so you can skip that first trip and be ready to jump into the pub life:
1. Galway Girl - Mundy (cover)
This is one of the most famous Irish pub songs and definitely my favorite, especially after I watched Gerard Butler sing it in P.S. I Love You.
2. Molly Malone - The Dubliners (cover)
Apparently the unofficial anthem of Dublin, Molly Malone is a famous traditional song that I heard in basically every irish pub I went to in Dublin. Molly Malone was a real girl who is so famous in Dublin that she even has a statue on Grafton Street and has a day dedicated to her on June 13.
3. Don’t Look Back in Anger - Oasis
I have an extremely embarrassing video of myself singing this song at the top of my lungs while I was out on St. Patrick’s Day, but I purposely recorded the video to remember what song it was. It’s definitely a good song to know the words to at least the chorus if you wanna sing along while you’re at a pub!
4. Wagon Wheel - Old Crow Medicine Show
If you’re from America, you probably know this song. I never would’ve expected this to be a popular one in Dublin, but I heard it played probably most often out of all of these songs.
5. I’ll Tell Me Ma - Young Dubliners
My friend who went to Dublin with me listened to this song weeks after we returned and it’s basically just another song that captures the “pub feel”.
6. Maria - Fiddler’s Green
I heard an irish band play this song live and it was beautiful!
7. If I Ever Leave This World Alive - Flogging Molly
Another song from P.S. I Love You that reminds me of Dublin and my departure from there.
8. Nancy Mulligan - Ed Sheeran
This is one of the songs from Sheeran’s Divide Album that was written about his irish grandmother. It tells a true story of his grandmother and grandfather’s forbidden love.
9. Little Lion Man - Mumford & Sons
For some reason, I never connected Mumford & Sons to Irish music until I heard a band close off with this song as their encore. Mumford & Sons uses all the instruments a trad band would use in Ireland.
10. I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) - The Proclaimers
This is kind of the song I listen to when I’m sending mental messages to Ireland that I will be back!
